We now start the second semester of school. This semester in class are main emphasis now will be on preparing the garden for planting and then planting our crop. In class last week we placed seeds in flats of approx 50 seeds per flat. The city of Upland is in Zone 9 and we will monitor the weather and hopefully begin planting in mid February.
The following seeds have been planted:
Work still need to be done in the garden.
1. Complete raised garden bird protection
2. (this is new) make repairs to the center raised garden that was built last year by Chino Valley Water District personnel. The raised garden did not hold up very well. Corners have begun separating.
3. Repair any broken irrigation lines in the garden.
4. Continue work on the Compost pile(s)
Quick note on the compost pile. Last week was the first full week with the black pool cover covering the pile. The last two readings on the pile show a temperature of 140 degrees at about 30" into the pile.
We are a continuation high school in Southern California. We are located in a metropolitan area and as a school have embraced Urban Farming. Our goal it to introduce our students to the farm. We currently are raising a variety of chickens and experimenting with egg colors.

Chicks moved out of Room 1 indoor coop to Outside
The chicks born on Jan 1-3 were moved to the outside chicken coop house just outside room 1 on Jan 10, Friday. Students on that Friday completed the construction of the enlargement of the coop. The chicken coop had a small break on one of the sides. We decided to fix the break and add an additional floor to the coop. This was done to make viewing of the chicks easier. We will see how this works.
Chicks Hatch
We had 26 chicks hatch between Jan 1 & 3, 2020. These chicks were from either white or tan eggs. At the time these eggs were collected none of the hens that lay the blue/green eggs or darker brown eggs. The eggs were placed in the incubator on Thursday, December 14.
